March 2008-June 2008

Tuesdays & Thursdays 4pm-6pm

Spy Hop's Radio Documentary program provides young people the opportunity and resources to create radio documentaries-stories, narratives, interviews and essays-in which to explore and express their thoughts, emotions and reactions on issues they find important within themselves and their community. Students will learn to use sound, music and voice to tell their stories.

During this four-month program, youth learn the art of radio documentary reporting, interviewing techniques, writing skills and digital audio production-how to produce a complete radio documentary.

The Sound Engineering Apprenticeship Program offers participants the opportunity to explore the realm of sound and music design. Whether it is mixing sound for a motion picture, broadcasting a radio theater program, producing a local band’s CD, or creating and producing radio spots, the experience is diverse. Apprentices work extensively with Pro Tools recording software in a studio where they gain experience with different kinds of microphones and microphone placements. The program provides hands-on education and real-world career experiences. For almost six months, youth apprentices work with professional industry mentors and instructors to design, develop, and implement affordable media works for local non-profit organizations. Young people of high school age are given the unique opportunity to:

  • Receive valuable creative, technical, and vocational skills in media and technology.
  • Develop critical learning, media literacy, and leadership skills.
  • Earn a modest weekly stipend (an important source of income for our participants).

Open Mic

Ages 14-19

Every Friday, 4pm-7pm

Every Saturday, Noon-4pm

Free

open micIf you’ve ever stopped into Spy Hop on a Friday you’ll notice a small trickle of students at about 3 pm awaiting our 4pm opening - by 4:30 the place is hoppin’ with beats, and teens jamming with an energy that everyone can feel. The sound of drums are coasting out of the recording studio, there are audio apprentices and new faces packed into the tiny control room, almost every computer is taken, and the drum beats are mingling with the hip-hop sounds of the mixers. What is this reason for this gloriously chaotic blend of explosive creativity???...it’s OPEN STUDIO NIGHT! and we have been bursting at the seams, taking in as many drop-ins as our tiny building could hold from 4-7 pm on Fridays...it was time for more time.

Due to the generous support of the Hot Topic Foundation Grant of $75,000, to support additional programs including our new Radio Documentary and long-running Audio Apprentice programs, Spy Hop is happy to announce that OPEN STUDIO is now open to teens on Saturday afternoons from 12-4 pm (in addition to regularly scheduled Friday nights). Stop on by, no pre-registration or reservations required. Here teens can come in and express themselves in an open environment, with the tools they need (including Garage Band, Pro Tools, Photoshop, and more)...AND even come away with a CD of their very own.

So, what are you waiting for? Here's your chance to be a star...
All services are offered free of charge.
