iDEA Saturday Continuing Education Workshops

The iDEA staff is excited to present four one-day workshops for K-12 educators.  No matter your experience with filmmaking, you will leave each workshop with creative lessons and effective techniques to share with your students in the classroom.

Cost: $150 registration fee per person per workshop. 

Participants have the option to receive two University of Utah credits upon completion of a workshop and creation of a portfolio of classroom work (one project and lesson plan).  University of Utah credit fees are not included in the workshop cost.

Produce a Documentary through Personal Narratives: Learn the art of documentary filmmaking through personal narratives. In this class, you will create your own personal narrative documentary and learn how to introduce this art form into your classroom. In addition to autobiography, the personal narrative style can be used for a variety of documentary film styles.

Claymation and Stop Motion: At this workshop you will work in small groups to produce a short claymation movie with a still camera and basic editing program, adding text, titles, and music. We will share several examples of claymation films produced by students and help you plan how to incorporate a stop motion project into your core content instruction.

Bells & Whistles: Lighting, Audio, and Green Screen: Sign-up for this class to learn more about good lighting techniques, audio, and how to use a green screen in  your classroom.

Not your Average Book Report!: Learn how to produce a movie trailer for a book with still images, audio, and text. Book trailers are a simple way to introduce filmmaking into core content instruction for elementary, middle, and high school students.

Summer 2010 Workshops

Below are dates slated for 2010 summer workshops (locations are TBD). We are available to schedule workshops throughout the year, and can customize workshops for your team focusing on a specific content area or film genre. Workshops are typically 3 - 5 days in duration, depending on your needs.

Snowbird, UT Workshops

  • June 21 - 25, 2010
  • August 2 - 6, 2010
  • August 9 - 13, 2010

Los Angeles, CA Workshops

  • July 12 - 16, 2010
  • July 26 - 30, 2010

Whenever possible, we recommend a team of four teachers from each school, in addition to an administrator, though neither are required.
