Scott graduated with Honors from Brigham Young University with a B.A. in Media Arts, emphasizing documentary production, and a Minor in Asian Studies. While studying documentary history and theory at BYU, Scott established a non-profit organization called the Thai Film Fund dedicated to helping Thai tsunami survivors tell their own stories through filmmaking and photography. His Honors thesis at BYU focused on the producing and analysis of personal documentary films. As part of his thesis he wrote, directed, and edited Only the Pizza Man Knows, a personal documentary about his father’s career change from stockbroker to pizza deliveryman. His film won the Honorable Mention Award at the 2007 LDS Film Festival.
Scott taught and designed curriculum for introductory film classes at BYU. In 2006 he designed curriculum focused on media literacy and documentary production principles that he used to teach at East Shore High School in Orem, UT.
In 2006, Scott also worked on the acclaimed PBS documentary series American Experience. He also worked for Ross McElwee, winner of the 1987 Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance film festival for his film Sherman’s March and professor of film production at Harvard University.
