APPLICATION DEADLINE: September 24, 2010
The Workshop: An intense ten-month workshop that allows student musicians and composers to form a band and learn the ins and outs of creating an original recording from beginning to end. With the guidance of skilled mentors—and with access to professional gear—these young musicians truly learn the many aspects of being part of a musical group.
The Process: The program will begin with songwriting workshops wherein students will write, arrange and record demos of their songs. They’ll continue by rehearsing the material as a band and performing live on the radio and in local all-ages venues. Once the students and mentors feel the album material is ready, the band will record and mix the tracks in a professional studio. Students will then conceive and design album layout as well as poster artwork. Upon completion of the recording, the band will participate in the manufacturing of their album and learn the functions of a record label. And finally, the band will host a record release party with a live performance at a local Salt Lake City venue.
The Album: The Musicology album will be an original musical work that can be written, produced, designed and released within a ten-month schedule. The entire project will be produced by mentors and students within the program. All music and lyrical content will be approved by Spy Hop Productions. We are looking for passionate, creative and energetic young musicians willing to work hard and complete a project.
The Participants: We’re looking for singers, MCs, guitarists, drummers, bassists, turntablists, keybooardists, and computer music composers to form a band within Spy Hop. Musicology participants must have a strong drive, good work ethic, open mind, a commitment to making an album and a deep desire to learn. Students must work well with others in a creative, collaborative environment. Participants must be 14 - 19 years of age at the time of registration.
Tuition: Musicology tuition is $165/month. Spy Hop Productions offers up to 90% financial assistance on a need basis. If you would like to apply, please complete the financial assistance form attached and contact Matt Mateus at (801)-532-7500 with any questions about financial assistance.
Musicology Assessment Day: All applicants to the Musicology Program must attend the Musicology Audition Day as part of the application process. The audition will last from 10 am until 1:00 pm on Saturday September 25th. For the audition, band applicants are expected to perform an original or cover song on their respective instrument for the program mentors. The audition will be followed by a short personal interview. Attendance to the assessment day is mandatory for all applicants.
